DRACULA YEAR ONE

Variety reported today that ALEX PROYAS (Dark City, IRobot) is going to direct DRACULA YEAR ZERO, a prequel of sorts. The story is to be set in the early vampire days of Vlad the Impaler (The real life Vlad was the Romanian royal who inspired the Bram Stoker book). The script writers said the goal was to show Vlad when he was still vital and to explore the fact that he's considered a hero in Romania for fending off the Turks, "Usually when you see him, he's past his prime and 100 years old. In our movie, he's at the height of his powers."

While vampires and Dracula are quite overplayed, I do love the character and am intrigued at a "Dracula Begins" approach, especially with Proyas helming it - I dug Dark City and I,Robot. I would also like to add that I wouldn't mind seeing that rad RED ARMOUR used in Coppola's Dracula!

*yes, I'm aware many of the pics used are not Dracula, but of Strahd Von Zarovich.

i wonder if they are going to retell one of the most famous stories of Vlad's brutality:

When Turkish diplomats traveled to his lands for a meeting with him, he welcomed them into his palace. Once inside the throne room, he asked that they remove their hats - and they kindly refused of course because they were wearing turbins. Vlad considered this to be thoroughly disrespectful and then commanded them to remove their 'hats'. When they refused again, he had the guards seize them and told them if they will not remove their hats before him, then they will never remove them. He then ordered his guards to nail their turbins to their heads.
He was a hard ass.
