AKIRA MOVIES

Variety is reporting Otomo's awesome epic AKIRA is being brought to the silver screen in the form of 2 movies; each movie adapting 3 of Otomo's thick books. The animated adaptation had its moments... and oh what cool moments they were.... but it was so compressed, you lost atleast two-thirds of the story easily. Personally, I don't think it needs to be and bringing it to live-action will only be a step down. Akira is a sequential art story. I guess seeing the bikes (if adapted properly) could be cool.....

Oh wait... its says "the drama takes place in "New Manhattan". I guess its going to be a total Americanized version. They just don't get it, do they? So much of what made Akira so awesome was that all that transpired (in the story and flashbacks) took place in Japan, the only country so far to have atomic bombs dropped on them. This is essential to the overall story and meaning. It's almost like adapting "The Color Purple" but with, say, Rich White South Africans - just not the same.

Bah, I've already lost interest in this. I do, however, highly highly recommend you contacting your local comic shop and picking up the graphic novel collections. They're fucking incredible!!!

Recommended Comic Shops: Neptune Comics & Golden Apple Comics
