THE RED TRUNK PROJECT: 001-005

Lately I've been coloring in New52 Superman's missing Red Trunks for fun.

 It's not merely a costume...
He's wearing Kryptonian garb.
Without the Red & Yellow in his mid-section,
his design is bland and uninspiring.
Superman is Iconic and visually symbolizes HOPE.

looks great with the trunks...I don't like the neckline, Turtleneck sweater look. Don't worry in two years or so what was once old will again be new...such is life in comics

We survived Mullet Superman and Electric Superman (Blue and Red!), we will survive this... unless DC decides to keep this as the new Superman look from here on out.

Removing the trunks shows an absolute lack of basic design understanding. They aren't there to keep his ass warm, they are there to break the monotony of the unitard/single color. To make the design more visually dynamic. Unlike all of Lee's scribbled lines all over every damn thing, which just makes things look shitty.

I do like the armor design, but he looks naked without his red trunks, and his red belt looks terrible and does nothing to break up the constant blue of his outfit. This hits all the right buttons for me, great blend of classic and modern.

The image of superman punching with the trunks almost horizontal to his leg seems really natural. They could be more shorts than trunks, or like the armor, just a color built into his pants, not really something that is on top of them. I don't understand why, if a character is wearing a silly costume to begin with there would be some issue with how silly it could be. You could update it and keep the look at the same time. These images show that it would have been fine to leave at least the color red on his pants and give him a nice big yellow belt, or waistband or something.
