This Deluxe edition is more than a reprint, and we have a number of new things going into the game box. A lot has happened in the World of Two Moons over the last 40 years - new creatures, new characters, new lands. With everything we want to include, using a 1" box like the original game no longer works. Thus, we have created a new 2" thick box for this Deluxe version. Of course, we'll have the new digital PDF versions of the Deluxe set available for download as well, something never available before. Other stretch goal items created exclusively for this deluxe edition include: a 3-panel Gamemaster screen, previously unpublished world map, deluxe ElfQuest dice set, new color standees for use in play, more Pre-generated player characters, and more creatures.

Which edition of ElfQuest is this?

Chaosium’s first edition of ElfQuest was a boxed set and its popularity led to three printings in 1984. The second edition of ElfQuest was done as a perfect bound book in 1989. So what changed between the two editions? The short answer is somewhat embarrassing... The contents didn't really change...

Most people see a 2nd edition logo and expect to get a game significantly adjusted and/or improved from the 1st edition. Surprisingly, that didn’t happen, not even close. Chaosium took every page of the ElfQuest boxed set and every page of the ElfQuest Companion and put them all into a single book. The only new content consists of twelve full-page color portraits, and two full-page black and white pieces of art from the comics. The one page of errata included in the 2nd and 3rd printings of the boxed set and the 3 pages of errata from the ElfQuest Companion ended up in the back of the 2nd edition book, with none of it incorporated into the text. Almost 99% of the 1st edition layout was re-used as-is. Only the page numbering was changed, along with a few reformatted headings.

Back in the 1980s most smaller RPG Companies didn't use computers to do the layout of their books. They did them on two-page cardstock story boards where they would physically cut and paste typed columns of text, tables, and art individually. If you wanted to change something you usually had to cut it from the page or paste something on top of it. Alas, the original storyboards for ElfQuest have been lost to the mists of time, so we can't show you a sample from any of the originals.

Fortunately, this Deluxe version allows for the best features of the boxed set and the new art from the perfect bound book. The stapled (saddle-stitched) Elfbook, Worldbook and ElfQuest Companion books can lay flat for easier use. Combining all the GM and Player information, especially all the scenarios, into the 2nd edition book worked awkwardly at best. Thus, we shifted back to the multi-book format. And, lastly, we fully incorporated all of the errata into the text!
