THEY'RE EXHAUST PORTS

via geek.com:

This past weekend, Disneyland converted their dark-coaster Space Mountain into Hyperspace Mountain as part of their “Season of the Force” tie-in marketing with the movie. Props and replicas from the upcoming movie are on display, one of which is the Kylo Ren lightsaber and some plaque information:

“Kylo Ren’s unusual lightsaber is an ancient design, although the one he carries is recently constructed. The crossguard blades, or quillons, are raw power vented from the primary central blade.”

* “Quillons” is the technical, sword name for the tiny, sub-swords that form a crossguard.

Yeah I love it. Apparently the explanation is that you can't build a light saber without the force. Since Ren doesn't have the force, this saber has been jerry-rigged to not quite work perfectly. Pretty cool.
