I've been trying to collect my thoughts... and Work has sucked up all my time... sorry.... I'm slowly working on a quick, short review.
But overall I did not like it. It ruined 'ALIEN' for me, espeically with what they did to the Space Jockeys.
The film itself, aside from the Alien conncetion, was enjoyable but riddled with plot holes and really dumb writing. High School Philosophy being sold as High Concept.
I wish it had been its own universe, not tied to 'Alien' - it would be a more enjoyable film for me.
Agreed JIM,....Resurrection and AVP ruined the Franchise,..Prometheus Ruined THE ALIEN and the original film. And yes, it was if Scott had just read "Finger Prints of The Gods" and decided to make a movie.
"...hey, there are a Bunch of dead aliens stacked up against a wall dead, as if they were running from something but couldn't get away,..Oh look a weird looking Cobra worm,..let me try and grab it..."
I'd been looking forward to your review too. But I think those couple of paragraphs pretty much summed up my feeling for it.
Thing is, I just can't let it go. I've seen it twice now, took the day off work to go and see the first showing in London at midnight and walked out at the end utterly fuming. And then went again with a non-Alien fanatic who said the same, WTF? I think the worst bit is when an Engineer plays a magic flute to get the derelict up and running, actually, no, there are other bits.
And yet I keep going back to it, scouring the internet forums for behind the scenes pics etc. I just can't believe Scott fucked it up that badly; it's as though I keep thinking there's a whole decent Alien prequel that he made and then threw away the concepts, but there isn't. All the preliminary artwork is dull and bland, it was a turkey before the first reel was shot.
I agree that it might have made an enjoyable sci-fi film if they hadn't used Alien ingredients, but they did, and well, it was just weak. I honestly thought it was going to be incredible with the opening scenes of David dying his hair etc. and then, um, where did that go?
I don't nerd out on anything else, but Alien is kind of my thing. And I almost feel insulted. Where was all the psycho-sexual horror that made the first so unpleasant and yet compelling? The imagery was totally toned down and Giger's work rubbed out.
Anyway, rant over. I never though I suffered from OCD, but I think Prometheus has proved that I do. People used to walk by my computer screen and ask 'why do you keep looking at that Alien Prequel website?'
On a more positive tip, love the blog. Please keep up the good work. Regards,
