Billy Tan, the artist who designed it, says "[writer] Sam wanted something with a little cross of EVA from Evangelion, something sleek and alien-like". By "alien-like" he obviously meant "Twiki, from Buck Rogers" and "Syclone, from Masters of the Universe".
