15 COMICS I DUG . . .
This "month" DC comes back a little - lately Marvel has been dominating my "dig pile", which is sad in-and-of itself.
GREEN LANTERN is solid, as usual, and I'm revving up for the big "DARKEST NIGHT" storyline. Oh, side note: While I love the Red [Rage] lanterns and love that they expel all their blood in a violent fit upon donning the red ring, must they always be spewing blood and trying to eat people? *psst, hey writers... I saw 28 Days Later, too... so did alot of people.
In addition, I happened to pick up BRAVE & THE BOLD #21, part 3 of a Green Lantern/Green Arrow teamup. I missed the first 2 parts, but I really enjoyed this issue. The nice art by Doug Braithwaite contributed greatly to that.
2 of my favorite DC books are about an issue away from their last [cancelled] issue; ROBIN & LEGION of SUPER-HEROES. Again, blow me DiDio.
Chris Gage's HOUSE OF M: CIVIL WAR mini concluded and it was a surprise awesome - well done, Chris. And I found myself quite surprisingly enjoying the COSMIC SIZE FANTASTIC FOUR special. Probably because it wasn't written by Mark Millar. And while many people threw their hands up at Marvel Zombies after the 2nd series - I was with you!!! - this 3rd series, however, is fantastic! It's by a diff't writer and full of more hardcore and less funny.
2 books I normally hate - Millar's WOLVERINE and Ellis' ASTONISHING X-MEN - found their way into my heart with their latest issues (Astonishing being #2 of the 2-issue mini-series "Ghost Boxes"). While not classics, they were fun and sang to my inner 14 year old.
Yost's X-FORCE is still the best x-title currently on the shelf. Which is funny, because when I first heard of the book, my head exploded. The mini-series X-INFERNUS is a surprise hit for me - so far, outstanding!
Esad Ribic painted one of (if not THE) best Namor images I've ever seen in SUB-MARINER: THE DEPTHS #5. I'll do a scan-n-post later. Kickass, dude!
And after an eon of boredom, THE WALKING DEAD has my interest once more. Why hasn't HBO picked this up yet?

HEADLESS VADER ON SIMPSONS
“Girls are so lame. Isn’t that right headless Darth Vader? What’s that? You miss your girlfriend armless Malibu Stacy wrapped in hockey tape?” [kissy-kissy]
Watch the episode.

WATCHMEN HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
By Alan Moore's Beard!!! Look at these fucking horrible WATCHMEN halloween costumes! I....I...I'm without words! They're a mockery of everything fans and that book stands for (too much?) DC... Warner Bros.... whomever... you are fucking godless whores.
By the way, Unkiedev sent these to me a few days ago, which caused my week-long illness of misery that is still in effect. Thanks, man.

JIMSMASH FANMAIL: THE HOLY SIDESWIPE
Hey, JimSmash!
On Sunday at church, our pastor told a story about how he wanted Sideswipe when he was 11 years old, for Christmas.
Gotta love a pastor that talks about Transformers, huh?
The story got better, 'cause he was talking about how he didn't get it and, when he went back to school after vacation...another kid in his class shared it for show-and-tell.
The teacher put it on his desk to display and our pastor STOLE it!
Ha! Anyway I thought you might appreciate that story.
Keep on Smashin!

"LUKE! LUKE! DON'T! IT'S A TRAP! IT'S A TRAP!"
Here's another gem from Gentle Giant Studios. I think the image speaks for itself. And it's saying, "I'M AWESOME!"

THE LEGION ON SMALLVILLE
I don't watch SMALLVILLE, but apparently 3 members of the LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES showed up ; SATURN GIRL, LIGHTNING LAD and COSMIC BOY!
While I'm still dreaming of a kickass Legion movie with "accurate costumes", I must give props to the Smallville costuming peeps for incorporating elements of their comic counterparts' costumes into their live-action designs. Kickass DC writer GEOFF JOHNS wrote the Smallville episode, so no wonder!
SATURN GIRL, a blonde, has the saturn logo and has a look & feel similar to her old school costume.
LIGHTNING LAD, a redhead, has the yellow lighting bolds on his [blue] chest! (no mechanical arm, tho)
COSMIC BOY, a brunette (*coughshouldbeblackcough*), has the silver circles on his chest and some purple creeping out from under his jacket.
...and they all are wearing LEGION FLIGHT RINGS!!!!
Nice!

SPIDEY LIKES THE OLDER LADIES?
We all heard about the Obama variant cover to AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #583. Well the regular cover was done by living legend JOHN ROMITA SR!! Romita Sr is a veteran of Spider-Man comics. One of his most famous Spidey moments was the introduction of Mary-Jane Watson, where her first words were [to Peter], "Face it, Tiger. You just hit the Jackpot!"
This new Romita Sr cover depicts Peter Parker on a date with Betty Brant and another young woman ("Action is his reward!" says the tagline"). His word balloon says, "Face it COUGARS, you've just hit the jackpot"
Hmmmm, whoever wrote the text on that cover (writer Mark Waid?) seems to misunderstand the meaning of that slang:
cou-gar [koo-ger]
-noun.
an older woman who is romantically interested in younger men.
This reminds me of McDonald's ad campaign a few years back where guys salivated over their double-cheeseburgers, exclaiming "I'D HIT IT!"

RIP: BOB MAY (ROBOT B9)
Yesterday, BOB MAY passed away at the age of 69. May was the guy INSIDE the "B9 ROBOT" suit on "LOST IN SPACE"!
Co-Star June Lockhart (Maureen Robinson) says about May:
"He always said he got the job because he fit in the robot suit. It was one of those wonderful Hollywood stories. He just happened to be on the studio lot when someone saw him and sent him to see Irwin Allen about the part. Allen said, 'If you can fit in the suit, you've got the job.'"
"He was particularly fond of his Robot role, once saying he came to consider the suit a 'home away from home.'"

"He was particularly fond of his Robot role, once saying he came to consider the suit a 'home away from home.'"
"He wore the suit for hours at a time and learned the lines of every actor in the show so he would know when to respond to their cues. Because it wasn't easy to get in and out of the suit, he kept it on during breaks."
"He was a smoker... From time to time (when he was on a break), we'd see smoke coming out of the robot. That always amused us."
BATMAN B&W STATUE: DAVID MAZZUCCHELLI
Kickass! DAVID MAZZUCCHELLI is the next artist to get the Batman Black & White Statue treatment! It's about time - Mazzucchelli's Batman is one of the all-time best! Don't believe me, pick up "Batman: Year One" by him and Frank Miller. This statue is killer and will look nice next to my Brian Bolland Batman B/W statue!
The Mazzucchelli statue is set for a September 2 release date.

"...YOU SAVED THE EARTH" (IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE)
Speaking of Galactica....
Watching ALIEN: RESURRECTION in the theater for the first time was one of the most dreadful, depressing experiences of my fucking life - just ask my wife, who still gives me shit about my post-movie-watching behavior .
I won't go into my loooooong angry tirade of why the movie is shit...
but hey, it could have been worse!
Here is the unused alternate ending to it...
Oh man....
Again, I won't go into my rant, but here's an excerpt from SISKEL & EBERT's review of the movie that cracked me up:
-----------
SISKEL: "Boy, it wore me out VERY quickly... I felt as I walked out that I had ENDURED an experience, certainly not enjoyed it."
EBERT: [irate] "...Those aliens seem to be able to reproduce themselves at will - to grow into tons and tons of alien biomass - despite apparently no food!-And they are able to attack, at will, go anywhere they want to, and yet they're so dumb they are always defeated! You'd think eventually they'd win!!!
SISKEL: "I hate to see a 1st class brain - yours - talk about this movie to the extent you just did. You're wasting your neurons, my friend."
-----------
Ha! Reading JimSmash would have made Siskel's brain explode!

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY
Today we celebrate the life and words of MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. As we enjoy our day off from work or school (if your job gave you the holiday off, that is), please take atleast a brief moment to think about our Civil Rights.
Think about where Civil Rights were at before King and the Civil Rights Movement...think about how much has changed since. And most importantly, think about how much work and growth is still needed.
Click here to read King's profound "I Have A Dream" speech, 1968. If you haven't heard or read it before, here's your chance!

DEATHPROOF ADVERTISING
Oops, I had saved this as a draft awhile back, but forgot to actually POST it....
When the DEATH PROOF dvd was released, some cities found these severed arms holding the dvd placed around their sidewalks.
That, or its just a print-ad emulating "viral campaigning".... anyone else is tired of the "viral fad"?
