I would start with the first ones, which were adaptations of the Dark Horse Comics.
Earth Hive Nightmare Asylum The Female War
* note: while the comics were the further adventures of Hicks & Newt post-'Aliens', pre-'Alien3', when the novel adaptations were released 'Alien3' had come out. So the novels had to change the names of Hicks & Newt. You're able to mentally decode the names after a few pages. I love this trilogy, especially the first two.
Then there's 'Labyrinth', which is great. Also a DH Comics adaptation.

Are those good? I have read a fre Star Wars and they are fun. Never tried other sci-fi franchise novels...except a couple of Doctor Who.
