DEATH DEALER COMIC

Here's some preview art for the upcoming new comic series "DEATH DEALER" based on Frank Frazetta's legendary paintings. In fact, Frazetta was consulted for research and getting the thumbs up on the series' approach and story. "What's the Death Dealer's deal anyway?" you say? Glad you asked!

Well, in terms of the new comic book, The Death Dealer is the story of two warring kingdoms and a mythical order that seeks peace between them. Nine hundred years ago, the land of Iparsia was ravaged by war between the kingdoms of Oro and Edani. As battles raged out of control, a black rider began to appear laying waste to both sides of the conflict, killing the greatest warriors as easily as the untrained combatants. This unconquerable rider was known as the Death Dealer. The kings of Oro and Edani recognized that if they did not end this war, the black rider would destroy them all. A treaty was signed in blood and the Death Dealer disappeared into the primeval forest.

Legend says that as long as Oro and Edani are at peace, the black rider will sleep. However, after ages of peace, the spectre of war has raised its bloody head once again, and the Death Dealer will not be far behind.

BATTLE OF THE PLANETS MOVIE

Sweet! According to Filmjunk, we'll be getting an animated BATTLE OF THE PLANETS
(aka "Gatchaman"!) film!!!

TMNT director Kevin Munroe will also direct the Gatchaman movie, which will remain true to the original Japanese show. “The whole point of it is to up the bar from what Turtles is… It’s a different movie completely so it’s kind of fun although it has teenagers and ninjas. Other than that, it’s completely different.” says Munroe. From the sounds of it, they’re interested in making it a little more adult-oriented as well. Producer Thomas Gray had this to add: “We put it on the pants on this one. This is going to be a very interesting film and even maybe pushing R.”

AUBURN FOLK

Attn: Auburn Folk!
So we're driving around the block last night looking for parking (street parking, ugh) and this SUV is kind of tailgating me. Well, not so much "tailgating" me as "kind of following me". I turn off onto a residential street and the SUV slowly follows. I do a U-Turn to park on the other side of the street and the SUV slows down then proceeds forward a bit. We're gathering our things and the SUV comes back around and pulls up beside me. "WAR EAGLE!!" a woman's voice comes out of the window. I look up and her and her husband are smiling ear-to-ear. "We saw your license plate frame!!" - which is Auburn Alumni. Turns out they graduated AU in 2000 (1998 for us) and I was the first person they've seen in LA with AU paraphenalia on their car. Plus, we live in the same area! Quick conversation, so that's all I got. They just wanted to give a good ole warm Auburn "HEY!". Pretty neat.

So "WAR EAGLE!!" to all my fellow AU readers!

TRANSFORMERS CHESS

IN REMEMBERANCE: WOLVERINE

Man, MARVEL is pissing me off something FIERCE! While in some ways they're putting out the best stuff in over 15 years, they're also fucking up so bad its embarrassing and downright infuriating! What they are doing to WOLVERINE right now is atrocious.

First, they've removed his testicles so he's now the "good boyscout guy". Ever since Marvel pushed him to be the new posterboy for the company in the 90s, selling his image on pillows and pajamas for small children, he's been on the steady decline as a character. "I'm the best there is at what I do." What he does is kill and maim with his razor sharp claws. Odd choice to make the new Marvel mascot.... Anyway, back to rant at hand....

Then they've amped up his healing factor to the point of being a god. Case in point, in a recent issue, all of his organic tissue is fried off, leaving nothing but his adamantium-laced skeleton. Within minutes, he's back to normal. So, now he's basically immortal with crazy regeneration powers? WTF? I won't even get into the mere existance of X-23, the "Buffy" teenage girl CLONE of Wolverine (she sports 2 claws in each hand and a claw in each foot)... that's another rant, entirely.

Now they're telling all his backstory, removing the "mystery" from the "mysterious character" and weaving him into everything within the Marvel Universe; for example, apparently he saved Black Widow when she was a child... and killed NUKE's father babysitter when Nuke was a child....They're taking the George Lucas approach and integrating him into EVERYTHING! I'm just waiting for the reveal that he's the father of Captain America, Charles Xavier, Magneto and Christopher Summers (just to convolute the Summer's Family tree even further!). Which leads me to the next Crime Against Wolverine...

Its been revealed in Wolverine: Origins (the main culprit in these atrocities) that Logan has a son. Ok, I can go with it... he's been around a looong time... I don't think its a good idea, but I'll go with it... However, in the next issue, apparently we get to meet the little bastard. And guess what - he has the same hair as Logan and sports hand claws, too! The first image shown had him with 2 claws coming out, much like X-23 (only no adamantium). Well, today Marvel released a the variant issue cover. Oooooh, surprise! A 3rd claw, underneath (kind of like Omega Red).

So now we have Wolverine, X-23 and Wolverine Jr running around. Supposedly, he may have a brother out there with claws, too (Origin & Wolv: The End). And they are going to reveal the true relationship between Wolverine and Sabretooth in Wolverine #50 - my bet is blood relation, because they've been teasing us with that for decades, but who knows. Why don't they just go for it and have a Wolverine Family book with all of them in there? It could be called X-CLAWS. Jeezus.
I remember fondly back in the day when Wolverine was my favorite character. Now, what they've done to him these past 15 years... I can't stand him and truly wish he'd go away forever. He's forever tarnished and ruined. As far as I'm concerned, he died after the metal was pulled from his body by Magneto in "Fatal Attractions".

RIP, Logan San.

I think its common knowledge that I LOATHED the AVP movie. And really want to punch something over the fact they're making another one. Well, here's a pic from AVP2. Looks like they're going with the Alien design from ALIENS (more or less), which is the one I prefer. Kinda cool, except now my favorite design will also be in a shitty movie. First stop when I get a TimeMachine: Stopping ALIEN sequels past the 2nd.

For any Predator fans out there, take note that it looks like they're using the Pred design from Predator 2. Hmmm, AVP sequel using designs from the other 2 sequels....... "clever".

OLD STAR TREK "NEW"

A while back I posted about the "Special Editions" of old Star Trek episodes with new backgrounds and space scenes added... or should I say "replacing the old original backgrounds/space scenes". (Click here for that post). I caught one episode a few weeks ago.... well, should I say, I caught about 2min of one. The new scene I saw (the Enterprise) looked good. It was clearly NOT a model on strings, but also did NOT look like the out-of-the-box fx we've all come to know on SciFi Channel movies. It worked. Unnessesary, in my mind, but it wasn't offensive. Here's a pic with newly added background from the episode "Wink of An Eye." On a side note, if you can, catch "Wink of An Eye".... it has some classic Shatner moments; time moves slower, so its Shatner.... talking..... slow-er....t hanusual. Genius!

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DAY

Today we celebrate the life and words of MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. As we enjoy our day off from work or school (if your job gave you the holiday off, that is), please take atleast a brief moment to think about our Civil Rights. Think about where Civil Rights were at before King and the Civil Rights Movement...think about how much has changed since. And most importantly, think about how much work and growth is still needed.

My grandparents had the honor of marching with Dr King on that historic day. To this day, when my grandmother reminesces about that day and the speech, she gets goosebumps!

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA MARATHON

Hey, Galactica fans! TODAY, January 15, SciFi Channel is running a BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Season 3 MARATHON!!! It starts at 9am and runs all day until 7pm! So kickback with some refreshments and watch the new season! I'm behind on about half of the season myself, so I'll be tuned in.... or atleast setting my VCR to record (no, I don't have TiVO yet).

FLASH GORDON TV SERIES

We will soon have a new tv series based on the old FLASH GORDON comic strips! At first I was angry, because I love the classic 1980 movie with all my heart. But then I quickly realized, no, this is a retelling of the COMIC strip from the 30s (which rocked, btw) - my anger still glows sun hot at the upcoming Stephen Sommers movie remake of my beloved '80 version. Anyway, so I then got excited about this new series. But THEN I realized its being produced by the SciFi Channel and spearheaded the same dudes who made the miniseries "Legend of Earthsea". Uggghhhh. I'd like to see the old comic strips done in animation, whether 2D or 3D, under capable hands who know, respect and "get" the material. I know, I ask for the impossible; Quality. The Flash Gordon SciFi series will be a 22 one-hour episode season.
Look for it in July 2007.
