WHOI* marine superintendent Dick Edwards was enlisted as an explosives expert on the set of JAWS. While filming on nearby Martha’s Vineyard, the film producers came to Woods Hole seeking help with their blasting permit. Thanks to his time with the US Navy and experience with seismic research at WHOI, Edwards knew exactly how to plant dynamite in the mechanical shark prop, creating that unforgettable explosive scene.
