DARK CRYSTAL MANGA

TokyoPop is about to publish a new manga comic based on Jim Henson's THE DARK CRYSTAL. Penned by Barbara Kesel, "Legend of The Dark Crystal" is set 100 years before the movie. So expect to be introduced to "new" unseen-before MYSTICS, SKEKSIS and GELFLINGS!

Below is some preview art. Its not necessarily in sequential order, so keep that in mind. I'm not digging how the Gelflings are drawn; they look more like THE LITTLES, than Gelflings. Regardless, some of the art is pretty nice looking. Kesel is a HUGE Dark Crystal fan and has done alot of research with Henson Co to make sure her stories are "legit". I'll pick it up and check it out.

Although, The Dark Crystal simply isn't the Dark Crystal without puppets.... or Jim Henson & Frank Oz for that matter.

Legend of the Dark Crystal will be available Tues Nov 13.

Dark Crystal is one of those things that I have such fond memories of but when I rewatched it as an adult I discovered that it was kind of terrible. Kind of- the voice acting was terrible. The gelflings were lame- they would have been better as Littles almost! But the Garthrim were frickin' cool. I might check out the manga.

I actually rad the "Return To Labyrinth" that focuses on Tobby (the baby from the movie) being a teen and going back.

You'd think it would just be total crap but it had the same tone and feeling of the movie. It was a pretty decent read.

Now as for this "Dark Crystal" I always hated the movie and I doubt I'll check this out. My problem with the movie... I dunno. I hated it when I was a kid because I just didn't buy into it. Then when I watched it again as an adult the dialog/story were crap but what was sooooooo bad was the sound design. The movie would have been so much more believable and the world would have been much more alive if some money had been budgeted for the sound.

Talks of a Prequel Crystal movie have been in the works at Jim Henson Studios for a while now. It keeps getting put on hold.

Last I heard, Genndy Tartakovsky (Star Wars Clone Wars cartoon) was directing a sequel called "Power of the Dark Crystal", co-written by David Odell who co-wrote the first one (and based on ideas planned out by Henson during the making of The Dark Crystal), and produced by Jim Henson's kids, Brian & Lisa Henson. yeah, go/hold/go/hold..... from what I hear now, its in progress with a 2009 release date. Fingers crossed.

I would vote Genndy Tartakovsky to remake Star Wars Episode 1 thru III.

That is awesome if he is involved with the new Dark Crystal.

Tried to watch the movie last night and couldn't get more than 15 minutes in it before I had to turn it off. It really is a bad film.

I saw the Dark Crystal, when i was a child, and was blown away by the amount of imagination that had gone into the world and the story. Judge it by its time. It was made 20 years ago. That's a long time. I've rewatched it since (just the other day in fact) and i still think it's wonderful. The characters are fantastic, i find the gelflings believable and really special. The idea of the mystics and the skeksis forming coming together to form one united race. The idea of two souls joining together. Dark and light. Male and female. Yin and Yang.

This is great because it makes you think, and the world around them is creative. Like with Avatar, someone went to a lot of trouble to build entire ecosystems to give the movie a more natural feel.
