Haha, excellent.
That's as good a reason as any... that question was raised soon after the movie came out (because the original series was still in syndication everywhere) - and I actually remember hearing someone say - "Just because he wasn't on the bridge - doesn't mean he wasn't on board..." After all, there's a couple hundred other folks on that starship - and they're not all wearing red shirts.
