Most of the comics I read are Mainstream. It's just the stuff I dig the most. But there are oodles of great non-mainstream books out there. So TINA has recommended some for everyone (thanks, Tina!):SCOTT PILGRIM: Cute & hilarious! There are fun gaming elements added in for extra added goodness.
PROFESSOR'S DAUGHTER: French GN just recently translated into English. The illustrations are lush & the story is sweet and kinda sad.
WORMWOOD GENTLEMAN CORPSE: Book about a zombie detective set in a supernatural world. Effing hilarious!
TEENAGERS FROM MARS: Old school classic. Just perfect.
BLACK HOLE: One of the creepiest books I've ever read!
PIZZERIA KAMIKAZEE: Wristcutters is based on this. The story is one of a kind & mucho interesting.
UNLIKELY: THis book sums up how people look back and remember relationships - scattered memories of the sweet, the shitty and the funny. Honest stuff here.
MOUSE GUARD: Gorgeous story of mice templar!
TANK GIRL: If you haven't yet read the Hewlett stuff, THEN scoop the new run by Ashley Wood. Fun shit in an adult-ish way. Random & strange.

What are we counting as "indy" just something that isn't DC or Marvel?
Yeah, I guess so... but that's more my own ignorance and laziness in posting. Is there a better term for those comics that are non-Big Two?

Non-DC/Marvel Books I'd recommend are:
"Bone" by Jeff Smith. If you've not picked this up because you felt it was too "all ages" then you're really missing out because it is by far the best comic series I've ever read.
"An American Born Chinese" published by First Second is more of a drama than a regular comic, but the twist and the pay off as well as the social commentary make it a great book to pick up.
"Ultra" by Image is fun book because it has a "Sex in the City" type of vibe but with Superheroes. Even though its the Luna brother's first book it is by far their best.
"Invincible" by Image is another great superhero comic. The book is kind of how "Spider-Man" should be but isn't. It perfectly balances superhero-stuff with real life as well as drama and comedy.
"Mom's Cancer" (which was published by a book company and can easily be found in most book stores) is one of the best if not the best non-fiction graphic novel I've ever read. It handles the serious topic of cancer but with a humor that keeps it from getting too dark and depressing.
"Blankets" published by Top Shelf and done by Craig Thompson is a seriously thick book, and tells a melodrama-filled coming of age story.
Anyway... those are just a few other suggestions that popped into my mind when thinking about this.
