I didn't care for the redesign in the Special Editions. But its ok, because I don't acknowledge the Special Editions and instead only watch the Original Versions. :)
I have to double-check this, but I've read that the Dewback was actually a prop rented/found in Tunisia. The question is: which obscure pre-1977 tunisian movie features such a creature?
Many chances this piece of information is inaccurate. The book "The art of Star Wars" shows at least one sketch for it by the late production designer John Barry.

Why does that 1970's Dewback look so much better than the ropey one in the Special Edition's ?!
